At Houlbrook Physiotherapy, we believe that staying independent and active is what matters most. Whether it’s being able to pop to the local shops, pottering in the garden, or simply moving around your home with ease, your mobility is the cornerstone of your quality of life.
However, as we age, we often hear from patients who feel they are “slowing down” or becoming “a bit unsteady.” Perhaps you’ve had a minor trip lately, or you find yourself reaching for the furniture as you walk across the room. While these moments can feel like a natural part of getting older, they are often a sign that your balance and strength need a little bit of TLC.
Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. In fact, with the right support and a proactive approach, the risk of falling can be significantly reduced. This is where physiotherapy comes in.
The Hidden Impact of a Fall
A fall is rarely just about the physical bump or bruise. For many of our patients, the most significant impact is the loss of confidence. After a trip or a “near miss,” it’s common to feel anxious about it happening again. This fear can lead to “fear-avoidance”—where you start doing less to stay safe, which ironically makes your muscles weaker and your balance worse, actually increasing your risk of another fall.
We see first-hand how this cycle can impact someone’s independence. Our goal is to break that cycle, helping you regain not just your physical strength, but the confidence to live your life without constantly looking at your feet and fear of falling.
Why Physiotherapy is Essential for Falls Prevention
You might wonder how a few exercises can make such a difference. Physiotherapy for falls prevention isn’t just about “getting fit”; it’s about targeted, clinical intervention. Here is how we help:
- Identifying the Root Cause No two people are the same. When we visit you at home or see you in our clinic, we look at the “whole picture.” Are your shoes worn out? Is your walking aid at the right height? Is it a weakness in your hips, or perhaps a lack of flexibility in your ankles? We carry out a full assessment to find out exactly why you might be feeling unsteady.
- Building “Functional” Strength We don’t just give you a sheet of exercises and send you on your way. Instead, we focus on the muscles you use every day—the ones that help you get out of a chair, climb the stairs, or step over a curb. At Houlbrook Physio, we will often pick a few exercises that you can focus on, and build the repetitions and resistance as you improve, before we add further exercises in.
- Training Your Balance Balance is a skill, and like any skill, it needs practice. We work on “proprioception”—your body’s ability to sense where it is in space. By safely challenging your balance in a controlled way, we help your brain and muscles react faster if you do trip, allowing you to “catch yourself” before a stumble becomes a fall.
- Environmental and Equipment Advice Sometimes, the smallest change makes the biggest difference. We often advise on equipment—from the right walking frame to the condition of your walking stick’s rubber ferrule (the “stopper” at the bottom). We can also help identify trip hazards in the home, such as loose rugs or poor lighting, ensuring your environment supports your mobility rather than hindering it.
Our Holistic Approach
At Houlbrook Physiotherapy, we pride ourselves on offering holistic care. We know that falls can be linked to other health issues, such as respiratory conditions or recovering from a hospital admission. Because we have forged strong links with other private practitioners and local GPs, we can ensure you’re getting the right support from every angle.
We also understand that sometimes, rehab is better together. That’s why we run our popular over 60’s strength class.
It’s Never Too Early to Start
The best time to think about falls prevention is before a fall happens. If you’ve noticed that your legs feel a bit heavier, or you’re feeling less sure of yourself when you’re out and about, now is the time to act.
Rehab works. We’ve seen it time and again with our patients across Cheshire. Whether it’s through one-to-one home visits or our classes, we are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals—no matter how big or small.
Ready to find your feet again? If you or a loved one are concerned about balance, or if you’ve recently had a hospital admission and want to get back on the road to recovery, we’d love to help.
